How Non-Gamstop Welcome Bonuses Actually Work

What a welcome bonus really is

A non-Gamstop welcome bonus is not free money. It is a credit of bonus funds that you can play with, but cannot withdraw until you have met a set of conditions. The casino is buying your activity. You are borrowing spending power in exchange for time at the tables.

The headline number - 330%, 550%, £1,500 - is the marketing. The mechanics underneath decide whether the offer is actually worth claiming.

The four numbers that define every offer

Every welcome package, no matter how it is dressed up, comes down to four figures:

  • Match percentage - how much bonus you get relative to your deposit. A 100% match doubles your deposit in bonus funds. Velobet runs a 330% match.
  • Maximum bonus - the cap. Cosmobet advertises up to £1,500, but you only reach that ceiling if your deposit is large enough.
  • Wagering requirement - how many times you must bet the bonus (or deposit plus bonus) before withdrawal unlocks. Usually expressed as 30x, 40x or 50x.
  • Maximum cashout - on some bonuses, especially no-deposit ones, the most you can ever withdraw from bonus winnings.

Get those four numbers for any offer and you can compare it properly. Our bonus comparison page lists them side by side for the four brands we cover.

How the money moves

Here is the typical lifecycle:

  1. You deposit. Say you put in £100 on a 100% match. Your cash balance is £100.
  2. The bonus credits. You now have £100 cash and £100 bonus, shown as separate balances. Most casinos play the cash balance down first.
  3. You wager. Every qualifying bet chips away at the wagering requirement. At 35x on the bonus, a £100 bonus needs £3,500 of bets cleared.
  4. Game weighting applies. Slots usually count 100%. Table games might count 10% or 0%. A £10 blackjack bet may only move the counter by £1.
  5. The bonus clears or expires. If you meet the wagering inside the time limit, the bonus funds and any winnings convert to withdrawable cash. If the clock runs out, the bonus and its winnings are removed.

Multi-deposit packages

Some welcome offers spread across several deposits. Rolletto's package, for example, applies a match across four separate deposits plus 100 spins. This is common and not a trick - but it does mean you have to keep depositing to unlock the full advertised value. If you only ever make one deposit, you only ever get the first slice.

Always read whether the headline figure is for one deposit or the whole sequence. A "£3,800" package like Zizobet's may be the total across the welcome sequence, not a single hit.

Where players lose value

The bonus itself is rarely the problem. Value leaks out through the terms:

  • Max bet rule. Bet above the cap (often £5) while a bonus is active and the casino can void winnings. This is the single most common reason withdrawals get rejected.
  • Game restrictions. Some games are barred entirely during wagering. Playing them can void the bonus.
  • Time limits. A 7-day window on a 50x requirement is tight. A 30-day window is generous.
  • Cash vs bonus play order. If bonus funds are played first, you are locked into wagering before you can touch your own money.

A worked example

Deposit £200, 200% match, £400 bonus, 40x wagering on bonus, £5 max bet, 30 days.

  • Total balance to play: £600
  • Wagering target: £400 x 40 = £16,000 of qualifying bets
  • At £2 average spins, that is 8,000 spins
  • Slots at 100% weighting clear it; a few hours of play across the month is realistic

That is a workable offer. Now change the time limit to 5 days and the max bet to £2 and the same bonus becomes a grind that most casual players will not finish.

How to use this

Before you claim anything, write down the four numbers. Then ask: can I realistically clear this wagering, at a bet size I am comfortable with, inside the time limit, on games I actually want to play? If yes, the bonus adds value. If no, you are better off depositing without it.

We explain how we score these trade-offs in our methodology, and the current packages from Cosmobet and the other three brands we cover are broken down on their review pages.
